📍Junín, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina
1930 – 1935“I was born in 1919 in Los Toldos, a poor village on the pampas, the youngest of five children of Juana Ibarguren and Juan Duarte, a landowner who already had a wife and family in another town. When I was a baby he went back to them for good, and we were left in poverty; when he was killed in a car accident, there was a painful scene at the church gates as his other family tried to keep us out of his funeral. My mother, proud and resourceful, moved us to Junín, a railway town, where she took in sewing to keep us, and we lived in a poor part of town. In Junín I fell in love with the cinema and the radio, recited poetry at school, and dreamed of being an actress. In 1934, at fifteen, I left for Buenos Aires with almost nothing. I became an actress, then Evita, the wife of the president and the voice of the descamisados. I never forgot what it felt like to be one of them.”
