📍Buenos Aires, Argentina

1895 – 1974

“I was born Juan Domingo Perón on the 8th of October 1895 in Lobos, Buenos Aires province, the son of a sheep farmer. I rose through the Argentine military, participated in the 1943 coup, and was elected President in 1946 with the support of the labour movement and the extraordinary Eva Duarte — Evita — who became my wife and my political partner and who died of cancer in 1952 at thirty-three. I was overthrown in 1955 and spent eighteen years in exile, mostly in Madrid. I returned to Argentina in 1973, was re-elected, and died in office in 1974. Buenos Aires was my city — the Plaza de Mayo, the crowds, the descamisados whose loyalty I had and whose lives I tried to improve. Peronism outlasted me and still shapes Argentine politics today.”

👍 LovedThe Plaza de Mayo and the extraordinary relationship with the Argentine working class. Evita's partnership and her ability to reach people I could not reach alone. The loyalty of the descamisados.
👎 DislikedThe authoritarian tendencies that compromised the democratic promise. The 1955 coup and eighteen years of exile. The violence of the period surrounding my return.
