📍Membrillar 531, Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina
1936 – 1958“I was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the eldest of five children of Italian immigrants, Mario and Regina, and I grew up at 531 Membrillar Street in Flores, a working-class barrio of Buenos Aires full of families like ours. My father was an accountant who had come from Piedmont; my grandmother Rosa, who lived nearby, taught me my prayers and told me stories of the old country in her Piedmontese dialect. Like everyone in the barrio, I supported San Lorenzo, and my father took us to watch them play; I remained a card-carrying member all my life. On 21 September 1953, when I was seventeen and on my way to meet friends, I stepped into the Basilica of San José de Flores, a few blocks from home, to make my confession, and there I felt God calling me. I trained as a chemical technician, worked in a laboratory and, briefly, as a nightclub bouncer, before entering the Jesuits. Even as archbishop of Buenos Aires I took the bus and cooked my own meals. A plaque on Membrillar Street now says I lived there.”
