1955 – 1976“Greg Norman was born in Mount Isa, a remote mining town in outback Queensland, in February 1955, to Merv, an electrical engineer, and Toini, the daughter of a Finnish carpenter and a fine golfer with a single-figure handicap. When he was a baby the family moved to Townsville on the tropical coast, and he and his sister, Janis, grew up as water people, surfing, swimming and fishing on the reef. He went to Townsville Grammar School before the family moved south to Brisbane. In Brisbane he went to Aspley State High School on the north side of the city, and he was a keen surfer and played rugby and cricket. He had little interest in golf until he was sixteen, when he caddied for his mother at the Virginia Golf Club in Brisbane and decided to try it himself. Within a year he was playing off scratch, hitting the ball enormous distances and practising for hours. He was a natural, aggressive athlete who loved risk, and he dreamed at first of joining the air force as a fighter pilot. He began his professional career as a trainee in the Royal Queensland pro shop under Charlie Earp, earning about 38 Australian dollars a week, and turned professional in 1976. Nicknamed the Great White Shark, he won two Open Championships and spent more than three hundred weeks as world number one, and later built a global business empire. He has always called himself a Queenslander who grew up on the beach.”
