📍Ivanhoe, Melbourne, Victoria 3079, Australia
1969 – 1987“Cate Blanchett grew up in Ivanhoe, a leafy suburb of parks and old houses in Melbourne's north-east, the middle of three children. Her mother, June, was a teacher and later a property developer, and her father, Robert Blanchett, was a Texan who had been a US Navy petty officer and met June when his ship visited Melbourne; he later worked in advertising. When Cate was ten, her father died suddenly of a heart attack, and her mother raised the three children with the help of Cate's grandmother. It was a lively, close household, and Cate was a confident, imaginative child who loved dressing up and performing for her family. She spent her childhood exploring Ivanhoe's hidden parks, learning piano and German, and putting on plays. At seven her mother took her to see The Mikado, starring the character actor Frank Thring, and she was transfixed. She went to Ivanhoe East Primary School, then Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School and Methodist Ladies' College, where she threw herself into drama. After studying economics and fine arts briefly at the University of Melbourne, she travelled abroad, then trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. She became a leading stage actor and won Academy Awards for The Aviator and Blue Jasmine. She later co-directed the Sydney Theatre Company with her husband. Melbourne remains proud of the girl from Ivanhoe who put on plays for her family.”
