“I was born in Essendon, in Melbourne's north, on my mum's birthday in 1962. Dad had a wild passion for reptiles and Mum was a wildlife rehabilitator — so even in suburban Victoria our house was full of injured creatures getting a second chance. Those first eight years in Essendon, watching my parents nurse hurt animals back to health, planted everything. Then Queensland called, and we packed up the dream and drove north. But it started here, in a Melbourne suburb, with two people who could not walk past a creature in trouble.”

“When I was eight we left Melbourne and Mum and Dad started a little reptile park on four acres at Beerwah, in the green hinterland behind Queensland's Sunshine Coast. I grew up among crocs and snakes and rescued roos — Dad put a twelve-foot python in my arms on my sixth birthday and had me handling crocodiles by nine. That park was my whole childhood: my backyard, my school, my heart. We rebuilt it into Australia Zoo, and I never really left. Everything I became — the khaki, the crikeys, the mad love of wildlife — grew straight out of that patch of Beerwah dirt.”
