1963 – 1973“Angus McKinnon Young was born in Glasgow in March 1955, the youngest son of a large Scottish family, and grew up in a tenement flat on Skerryvore Road in the Cranhill housing scheme. After the terrible winter of 1962 to 1963, his father, William, struggling to find work, decided the younger children would have better prospects in Australia, and in June 1963 the family flew to Sydney, staying at first in Nissen huts at the Villawood migrant hostel, where his brother George met another migrant, Harry Vanda, and began the Easybeats. The family soon moved into a semi-detached house at 4 Burleigh Street in Burwood, an inner-western suburb of Sydney. Angus went to Burwood Public School and then Ashfield Boys High School, where he only enjoyed the art classes, and he practised guitar in his bedroom every day after school, inspired by his brothers. George was already a star with the Easybeats, and Malcolm, two years older than Angus, was a brilliant rhythm guitarist. Angus left school at fifteen to follow his brothers into music, working as a printer's assistant at a magazine while playing in local bands. In 1973 Angus and Malcolm formed AC/DC, and his sister Margaret suggested he wear his school uniform on stage, which became his famous look, duck-walking and playing wild solos. With Bon Scott and later Brian Johnson, AC/DC recorded Highway to Hell and Back in Black, one of the best-selling albums ever. Burwood proudly celebrates its connection to AC/DC and the Young brothers who grew up there.”
