📍Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
1857 – 1926“Ko au ko Timi Kara, ko James Carroll hoki. I was born on the 28th of October 1857 at Wairoa in Hawke's Bay, of Ngāti Kahungunu and Irish descent, and I became one of the most significant political figures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century — the first person of Māori descent to act as Prime Minister of New Zealand, in 1909 and 1911. I served as a Member of Parliament for thirty-six years and held the Native Affairs portfolio for most of that time, working to advance Māori land rights and political participation within the colonial parliamentary system. My mixed heritage gave me a position between two worlds that I tried to use for the benefit of Māori people. Wairoa and the Hawke's Bay coast were home — the rivers, the ranges, the people of Ngāti Kahungunu.”
