1974 – 1994“Karrie Webb was born in December 1974 and grew up in Ayr, a small sugar-cane town in the Burdekin district of North Queensland, south of Townsville, surrounded by cane fields, the river delta and the Coral Sea. Her grandparents, Mick and Joyce Collinson, introduced her to golf when she was four, taking her out for nine holes on Sunday mornings and carrying her on the golf bag when she got tired. She started playing properly at eight and won her first trophy in her first tournament. Her coach, Kelvin Haller, was a family friend who had become quadriplegic after a workplace accident and could not use his arms or legs; he taught her entirely by watching and talking, and he became her lifelong mentor. Her idol was Greg Norman, a fellow Queenslander, and for her twelfth birthday her grandparents gave her tickets to the 1986 Queensland Open, where she saw him play for the first time and decided she would become a professional golfer. In her Ayr High School yearbook, she called meeting Norman a dream come true. She turned professional in 1994 and won the British Women's Open in her first year, and was LPGA rookie of the year in 1996. She went on to win seven major championships and complete the career Grand Slam, becoming the youngest woman inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. She has funded scholarships for young Australian golfers and remains devoted to Ayr and to Kelvin Haller.”
