1987 – 2012

“Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton, California, in June 1987. His parents, both from the South Side of Chicago, had moved to Compton as teenagers in 1984, hoping for a fresh start. The family lived on welfare and in Section 8 housing, and Kendrick, a quiet, watchful child whom his mother described as a loner, went to McNair Elementary School and Centennial High School in Compton, where he was a straight-A student. He was writing poetry and rhymes from a young age, and by sixteen he was recording mixtapes as K.Dot. The neighbourhood's gang violence and its tight community both run through his music. His 2011 debut album, Section.80, named after Section 8 housing and the decade of his birth, led to a deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, and in 2018 he became the first musician outside classical and jazz to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.”

👍 LovedCompton's community, writing in notebooks, and watching people
👎 DislikedThe violence that cost his neighbourhood so much
