📍Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California, USA
1974 – 1990“Leonardo DiCaprio was born in Los Angeles in 1974, the only child of Irmelin Indenbirken, a German-born legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, an underground comix writer and publisher. Legend has it that his mother chose his name when he kicked while she was looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in Florence. His parents separated when he was a baby but stayed close, and he grew up mainly with his mother in a rough stretch of East Hollywood, near Hollywood Boulevard and Western Avenue, before they moved to the gentler streets of Los Feliz. He has spoken frankly about what he saw on those streets as a boy: drugs, poverty and the darker side of Hollywood, just blocks from the studios. He has said that it gave him a strong sense of what he did not want for his life. At the same time, his father's world of artists, comic books and counterculture friends filled his imagination, and his mother and grandmother encouraged his love of performing. He attended Seeds University Elementary School and later John Marshall High School in Los Feliz, and he was a born mimic and class clown. He began auditioning as a child, appearing in commercials and television before Growing Pains, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Titanic made him a global star. He has kept close ties to the area where he grew up: the Los Feliz branch library stands on the site of a house where he lived as a child, and he supported its computer centre for local children. His long commitment to protecting the natural world grew alongside that sense of giving back.”
