📍36 Avenue Georges-Mandel, 75116 Paris, France
1966 – 1977“I was born in New York to Greek parents, and my mother decided early that my voice would be the family's fortune; I sang for her before I can remember choosing to. At thirteen she took my sister and me back to Athens, and I came of age there through the war and the occupation, studying at the conservatory under Elvira de Hidalgo and singing for whatever it would bring. After the great years — La Scala, Covent Garden, the Met — I made my home in Paris, in a third-floor apartment at 36 Avenue Georges-Mandel, in the elegant sixteenth arrondissement near the Trocadéro. I lived here for about a decade after leaving the opera stage, with my butler Ferruccio and my housekeeper Bruna, who had been with me for years, and my little dogs for company. I listened to my old recordings late at night, taught a little, and once more tried to sing in public. Paris gave me privacy and a kind of peace after a life lived in front of the world.”
