📍View Park-Windsor Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA
1981 – 1999“Meghan Markle was born in Los Angeles in 1981 and grew up in View Park-Windsor Hills, a leafy, largely Black middle-class neighbourhood in the hills south-west of downtown, sometimes called the Black Beverly Hills. Her mother, Doria Ragland, was a social worker and yoga instructor, and her father, Thomas Markle, was an Emmy-winning lighting director in television. Her parents separated when she was young, and she moved between their homes, but both were closely involved in her childhood. She went to the Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse and then to Immaculate Heart, a Catholic girls' school in Los Feliz, where she took part in school plays and musicals, with her father helping on the lighting. She often visited him on the set of Married... with Children after school. Growing up biracial in Los Angeles shaped her deeply, and she has written about the moment a school form asked her to tick one box for her ethnicity, and her father told her to draw her own. Her mother took her to volunteer at soup kitchens, and taught her to notice injustice. At eleven she saw a television advertisement claiming that women all over America were fighting greasy pots and pans. She wrote to the manufacturer, Procter & Gamble, and to public figures, and the advert was changed to say people. She has said that was when she realised the power of speaking up. She went on to Northwestern University, then to acting and Suits, and, after marrying Prince Harry, to her own advocacy and business. The sense of justice and the self-made confidence she learned in View Park have remained at the centre of her public life.”
