📍Ukerebagh Island, Tweed River, NSW 2486, Australia
1922 – 1927“I was born under a palm tree on Ukerebagh Island, a scrap of land in the Tweed River near the Queensland border, in 1922. We had almost nothing — a Jagera family living on the river's edge, my grandmother my real teacher, for I had barely two years of school in my whole childhood. When I was about five we left the island to camp with my grandparents on the banks of the Richmond. I cut cane, cleared scrub, herded stock. From that river-mouth poverty I would one day walk into the Australian Senate — the first Aboriginal person ever to sit in our Parliament. But it began here, on the water, with my grandmother's lessons.”
