📍Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90043, USA
1985 – 2019“I was born Ermias Joseph Asghedom in Los Angeles in August 1985, and grew up in the Crenshaw District of South Los Angeles, the heart of the city's Black community, around the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue. My father came from Eritrea, in East Africa, and my mother was African American, and I grew up with my older brother, Samiel, and my sister. The neighbourhood was tough, and like many boys there, I got caught up in the streets as a teenager. I was always curious and hungry to learn. I taught myself about computers and recording, and I read books on business, history and self-improvement. In 2004, when I was nineteen, my father took my brother and me on a three-month trip to Eritrea, and seeing the country, its people and its pride changed me. I came home with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to give back. I started rapping and recording mixtapes, Slauson Boy and Bullets Ain't Got No Name, and sold them myself, out of the trunk of my car in the parking lot at Crenshaw and Slauson, calling my label All Money In. With my brother, I bought the strip mall at that corner, where I opened my store, The Marathon Clothing, and helped start Vector90, a co-working space teaching young people from the neighbourhood science, technology and maths. My album Victory Lap was nominated for a Grammy. My life was taken outside my store in 2019, but the intersection is now named Ermias Nipsey Hussle Asghedom Square, and the marathon continues in Crenshaw.”
