📍Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India
1982 – 2000“Priyanka Chopra was born in Jamshedpur in July 1982 to Ashok and Madhu Chopra, both doctors in the Indian Army, and her childhood followed their postings across India: Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ladakh, Lucknow, Pune and Bareilly. She has fond memories of playing in the mountain valleys of Leh, and of army cantonments where neighbours were like family. Bareilly, a bustling city in western Uttar Pradesh known for its bazaars and old temples, became the family's base, and her younger brother, Siddharth, was born when she was seven. She went to La Martinière Girls' College in Lucknow and to St Maria Goretti College in Bareilly. At thirteen she moved to the United States to live with her aunt, attending schools in Massachusetts and Iowa, where she was bullied for being Indian, but also discovered choir, musical theatre and a love of performing. At sixteen she came home to Bareilly, and she has said she returned a different person, more confident and independent. Her parents ran a clinic in the city, and she finished her schooling there, dreaming of becoming an engineer or a criminal psychologist. In 2000, at seventeen, her mother entered her photographs in the Miss India contest. She won, and later that year was crowned Miss World in London. Her parents gave up their medical work in Bareilly to support her career. She became one of Bollywood's biggest stars, then crossed over to American television in Quantico and to Hollywood. She has spoken with great affection of Bareilly and the army childhood that taught her to adapt anywhere.”
