1917 – 1984“I was born Indira Priyadarshini Nehru on the 19th of November 1917 in Allahabad, the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Kaul. I grew up in the nationalist movement — my childhood was spent watching my father imprisoned and released and imprisoned again, my mother dying of tuberculosis at thirty-six, the independence struggle woven into every year of my education. I married Feroze Gandhi — no relation to the Mahatma — and took his name. I became Prime Minister in 1966, split the Congress party, won the 1971 election on a landslide, led India to victory in the war that created Bangladesh, declared the Emergency in 1975, lost the 1977 election, returned to power in 1980, ordered the storming of the Golden Temple in 1984, and was assassinated by my own bodyguards on the 31st of October 1984.”
