1889 – 1964“I was born Jawaharlal Nehru on the 14th of November 1889 in Allahabad, into one of the most distinguished families of the Indian nationalist movement. My father Motilal was a celebrated lawyer and a leader of the Indian National Congress, and Anand Bhavan — our family home in Allahabad — was one of the great political salons of colonial India. I was educated at Harrow and Cambridge, became Gandhi's closest political partner, was imprisoned nine times by the British for a total of over nine years, and became independent India's first Prime Minister in August 1947. I served until my death in 1964. Anand Bhavan was where I grew up, where my father shaped my politics, and where the vision of a secular, democratic, non-aligned India first formed in rooms filled with the best minds of the independence movement.”
