📍Jalsa, Juhu, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400049, India
from 1982“Amitabh Bachchan grew up in Allahabad, the son of the celebrated Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and the social activist Teji Bachchan. His father's poetry, readings and literary friends filled the house, and his mother's love of theatre encouraged his interest in performing. After studying in Nainital and Delhi and working for a shipping company in Calcutta, he came to Bombay in the late 1960s to try his luck in films, and after early setbacks his rich baritone voice and intensity made him the angry young man of Zanjeer and Deewaar. His first family bungalow in Juhu was Prateeksha, where his parents lived with him and where his father built a small family temple. In the early 1980s he made Jalsa, a white bungalow on a quiet road nearby, his main home, and it has been the Bachchan family's home ever since. In 1982, during the filming of Coolie, he was badly injured, and crowds of well-wishers gathered and prayed while he recovered. After that, the bond between Amitabh Bachchan and his public became something almost personal. That bond is visible at Jalsa every Sunday. For decades, crowds have gathered outside the gates, and he has come out to greet them, often barefoot, with folded hands. He calls these fans his extended family. Jalsa has seen weddings, Diwali celebrations and grandchildren, and his blog and social media posts often begin from home. In his poetry readings he frequently recites his father's verses, and Jalsa, like Prateeksha before it, remains a house where poetry and family come first.”
