“Sachin Tendulkar grew up in Sahitya Sahawas, a cooperative housing colony for writers and artists in Bandra East, Mumbai, living for many years on the fourth floor of a block called Usha Kaal. His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a respected Marathi poet and novelist and a professor, and his mother, Rajni, worked in insurance. His father, a music lover, named him after the composer Sachin Dev Burman. The colony was full of writers, poets and musicians, and the Tendulkars' home was gentle, literary and close. As a boy Sachin was full of mischief, climbing trees, getting into scrapes and playing every game going in the colony's courtyards. His older half-brother Ajit, seeing his energy, took him at about eleven to the coach Ramakant Achrekar at Shivaji Park in Dadar. Achrekar spotted his talent at once and persuaded the family to move him to Sharadashram Vidyamandir, a school with a powerful cricket team. Sachin practised for hours every day, and to keep him going, Achrekar would place a one-rupee coin on top of the stumps: any bowler who dismissed him won it, and if he survived the whole session the coin was his. He kept those coins all his life. At fourteen he shared a world-record schoolboy partnership with his friend Vinod Kambli, and at sixteen he made his Test debut for India in Pakistan. He went on to score a hundred international centuries, and he has always credited his father's calm, his brother's sacrifices and Achrekar's coaching. The writers' colony in Bandra, where a boy was taught that character mattered more than fame, remains a place of pride for Mumbai.”
