from 2001“Shah Rukh Khan grew up in a middle-class family in Delhi, the son of a freedom fighter from Peshawar who ran a small business; he lost his father when he was fifteen and his mother a few years later, just before his career began. He arrived in Bombay with little money, and as a struggling actor he would stand on the seafront at Bandstand in Bandra and gaze at a grand old heritage bungalow called Villa Vienna, overlooking the Arabian Sea. In 2001, after his early hits, he bought it — spending so much that, he has said, he had no money left to furnish it for a while — and renamed it Mannat, an Urdu word for a vow or a wish come true. It has been his family home ever since, with his wife Gauri, a designer, shaping its interiors. Every birthday and every Eid, thousands of fans pack the road outside, and he climbs onto the wall to wave to them. Mannat has become one of Mumbai's best-known landmarks, a symbol of a Delhi boy's dream fulfilled.”
