📍West Delhi, Delhi, India
1988 – 2008“Virat Kohli was born in Delhi in November 1988 and spent his early years in Uttam Nagar, a crowded, busy middle-class neighbourhood in West Delhi. His father, Prem, was a criminal lawyer, and his mother, Saroj, a homemaker; he has an older brother and sister. He was cricket-mad from the start, playing with a plastic bat and ball at home and in the lanes with friends, and his father bowled to him in the evenings. When he was nine, neighbours told his father that Virat shouldn't waste his time in gully cricket but should join a proper club. In 1998 his father took him to the newly opened West Delhi Cricket Academy, where the coach, Rajkumar Sharma, became his mentor and a second father. He went to Vishal Bharti Public School and later moved to a school in Paschim Vihar, closer to his cricket practice. He was a fiery, determined, sometimes cocky boy who hated losing, and he trained relentlessly. In December 2006, when he was eighteen, his father died suddenly in the night. Virat was in the middle of a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Karnataka, and the next morning he went to the ground and batted, scoring 90 to help save the game, before going to his father's funeral. He has said that day changed him for ever. In 2008 he captained India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup, and he became one of the greatest batsmen in history and a captain of the national team. He has often thanked his first coach and his family for everything.”
