📍Torrance, California, USA
1966 – 1985“Quentin Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in March 1963. His mother, Connie, was just sixteen when she became pregnant, and his father left before he was born. When Quentin was small, Connie moved back to California, married a musician, Curtis Zastoupil, and settled in Torrance, a sprawling South Bay suburb of Los Angeles, with its refinery, bungalows and shopping centres, later living in nearby Harbor City. Connie worked her way up into health-care management while raising him. He was a restless, imaginative boy who was bored at school, and cinema became his education. His mother and stepfather took him to see adult films from a young age, including Deliverance and Carnal Knowledge, and he spent hours at a cinema in nearby Carson that showed kung fu films, blaxploitation and exploitation films. He wrote screenplays as a child and devoured comics, television and pulp novels. He went to Fleming Junior High and Narbonne High School in Harbor City, but dropped out at about fifteen to take acting classes full-time. He worked as an usher at an adult cinema in Torrance and then for five years at Video Archives, a video shop in Manhattan Beach, where he and his co-workers talked about films all day and he absorbed thousands of them. There he wrote the scripts for True Romance and Natural Born Killers. His first feature, Reservoir Dogs, came out in 1992, followed by Pulp Fiction, which won him an Oscar for its screenplay, and he has since made films soaked in the cinema of his South Bay youth.”
