📍Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
1975 – 1997“Sia Kate Isobelle Furler was born in Adelaide in December 1975 and grew up in a creative, bohemian household in the inner suburbs of the city, including North Adelaide, with its leafy streets, sandstone villas and parklands. Her father, Phil Colson, was a guitarist who played in a string of Adelaide bands, and her mother, Loene Furler, was an art lecturer who also sang. Musicians were always coming and going, and bands often rehearsed at the family home; Sia sat in on the rehearsals and practised harmonies while the adults wrote songs. As a child she loved Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Sting, and she would imitate their voices. Colin Hay, the singer of Men at Work, was a close family friend whom she called her fake uncle, and when she was about twelve she stayed with him in New York for a month. She went to Adelaide High School and spent time in Italy as a teenager. Adelaide in the early 1990s had a lively acid-jazz and live-music scene, and at seventeen she joined a local jazz-funk band called Crisp, singing in pubs and clubs across the city and releasing two albums with them. In 1997 she left Adelaide, eventually settling in London, where she sang with Zero 7 and launched a solo career. After years of writing hits for other artists, she found global fame with Chandelier in 2014, performing with her face hidden behind her trademark wig. She has spoken publicly about her struggles with mental health and addiction, and her music has always carried the soulful harmonies she first learned in her parents' living room.”
