📍Te Araroa, East Cape, New Zealand
1874 – 1950“Ko au ko Āpirana Turupa Ngata. I was born on the 3rd of July 1874 at Te Araroa on the East Cape, of Ngāti Porou descent, and I became the first Māori to graduate from a New Zealand university — Canterbury College, 1893 — and then to complete a law degree. I entered Parliament in 1905 and served for thirty-eight years, becoming the most influential Māori politician of the twentieth century. My life's work was the revitalisation of Māori land, culture, and people after the devastation of the nineteenth century. The Māori land development schemes I designed in the 1920s and 1930s brought thousands of acres of Māori land back into productive use. I compiled and preserved the waiata and haka of my people in Ngā Mōteatea. Te Araroa and the East Cape were always home — the mountain, the sea, the marae of Ngāti Porou.”
