1988 – 2007“Stephanie Gilmore was born in Murwillumbah, in the Tweed Valley of northern New South Wales, in January 1988, and grew up in Kingscliff, a relaxed coastal town on the Tweed Coast, just south of the Queensland border, with long beaches, a creek and a laid-back village feel. Her father was a keen surfer, and Stephanie and her sisters had little choice but to learn to ride waves; the family's weekends were spent at the beach. She started on a bodyboard and was standing up on a surfboard by about ten, surfing the beach breaks of Kingscliff and the famous points of the southern Gold Coast, just up the road. She had a natural, graceful style and an easy smile, and by eleven she knew she wanted to surf for a living. She went to school in Kingscliff and competed in junior contests, and at seventeen she won a world tour event as a wildcard at Snapper Rocks, beating the professionals before she had even finished school. In 2007, in her first year on the professional tour, she won the world title, the only surfer in history to win a world title in their rookie season, and she won the next three as well. She went on to win eight world titles, a record, and became known for her flowing, elegant surfing, as well as her campaign for equal prize money for women, which the World Surf League adopted in 2019. Kingscliff is proud to call her its own, and she still calls the Tweed Coast home.”
