📍Burbank, California, USA
1958 – 1976“Tim Burton was born in Burbank, California, in August 1958 and grew up in this sunny, orderly suburb in the San Fernando Valley, home to the Disney, Warner Bros and NBC studios, with neat lawns, palm trees and identical houses. His father, Bill, a former minor-league baseball player, worked for the Burbank Parks and Recreation Department, and his mother, Jean, ran a gift shop selling cat-themed items. He had a younger brother, Daniel. He was a quiet, solitary boy who felt out of place in Burbank's bright suburbia and found it strangely sinister. He loved horror films, especially the Edgar Allan Poe films of the 1960s starring Vincent Price, and he has said Price helped him get through childhood. He played in the local cemetery, staged elaborate pranks to scare the neighbours, and made stop-motion and 8mm films in the back garden. From about ten until high school he lived with his grandmother, and later in a small flat above a garage she owned, a period that left him even more withdrawn and imaginative. In ninth grade he won a contest to design an anti-litter poster, which was displayed on Burbank's rubbish trucks for a year. After high school he studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts on a Disney fellowship, and worked as an animator at Disney. His short film Vincent, narrated by Vincent Price himself, began his career, followed by Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, set in a pastel suburb much like Burbank, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. His work has always been inspired by the outsider's view of suburbia he had as a boy.”
