1994 – 2011“Tyler Wright was born in March 1994 and grew up in Culburra Beach, a small coastal village on the New South Wales south coast, at the mouth of the Crookhaven River, with long beaches, a lake and bush all around. Her parents, Rob and Fiona, were both keen surfers, and Tyler grew up with four siblings, Owen, Kirby, Mikey and Tim, in a family where surfing was everything. Her father taught all the children to surf when they were young, and he was determined to raise champions, running family life like a training camp. The family drove up and down the east coast in a van so the children could compete in junior events, and Tyler surfed every day on the beaches of Culburra, competing against her brothers, which made her tough and fearless. In 2008, at just fourteen, she entered the Beachley Classic at Manly as a wildcard, against the world's best women, and won it, becoming the youngest person ever to win a world championship tour event, beating champions twice her age. She won the junior world title in 2010 and joined the world tour full-time the next year. In 2016 and 2017 she won back-to-back world titles, and she became an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and for women in surfing. Her brother Owen won an Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo, and her brother Mikey became a professional surfer too. Culburra Beach is proud of its surfing family, and the Wrights remain rooted in the south coast where they learned to surf.”
