1995 – 2008“Emma Watson was born in Paris in 1990 to two English lawyers and spent her first years in Maisons-Laffitte, outside the city. When she was five her parents separated, and she moved with her mother and younger brother to Oxfordshire, spending weekends with her father in London. Oxford became her home: its old colleges, libraries and parks, and a school culture that took reading, debate and curiosity very seriously. She attended the Dragon School, an independent prep school in north Oxford, and from about the age of six she wanted to be an actress. She trained at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a part-time school for acting, singing and dance, and by ten she had appeared in Stagecoach productions and school plays such as The Happy Prince and Arthur: The Young Years, but had never acted professionally. In 1999, when casting agents for the first Harry Potter film were searching schools across Britain, her theatre teacher put her name forward. After eight auditions she was cast as Hermione Granger. She filmed the series throughout her teens while continuing her education, first at the Dragon School and then at Headington School in Oxford, where she took her exams with excellent results despite her schedule. Hermione, the bookish girl who refused to be underestimated, was a role she grew into in an Oxford setting that suited her well. After the films, she studied English literature at Brown University and at Oxford, and became a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. The seriousness about learning and fairness that she brought to that role has its roots in her Oxford school days.”
