📍Christ Church, St Aldate's, Oxford OX1 1DP, UK
1851 – 1898“I was the eldest son in a parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire and later Croft in Yorkshire, one of eleven children, and I spent my boyhood inventing games, puzzles, a toy railway and family magazines to keep my brothers and sisters amused. I came up to Christ Church in 1851 and never truly left: as Charles Dodgson, lecturer in mathematics, I lived in college rooms off its great quadrangle for the rest of my life. When Dean Liddell arrived in 1856, his children played in the Deanery garden below the library windows, and I befriended them, photographing them in costumes and tableaux. On the golden afternoon of 4 July 1862, rowing up the river to Godstow with the three Liddell girls, I began a story about a girl named Alice who fell down a rabbit hole; Alice begged me to write it down. The college fed my imagination everywhere: the Great Hall, its long tables and portraits; the little door into the Deanery garden; the Dean's cat. Christ Church was home for nearly fifty years.”
