1996 – 2014“Florence Pugh was born in Oxford in January 1996 and grew up in Oxfordshire, in a lively, creative family. Her father, Clinton, is a restaurateur, and her mother, Deborah, a dancer, and she is one of four children; her older brother, Toby Sebastian, is a musician and actor, and her older sister, Arabella Gibbins, an actress. As a small child she suffered from tracheomalacia, a condition affecting her windpipe, and the family moved for a few years to the warmer climate of Andalusia in southern Spain, where she went to school in Sotogrande. Back in Oxfordshire, she went to Cokethorpe School, where, at about six, she discovered a love of doing accents and making people laugh, then Wychwood School and St Edward's School in Oxford. She has described feeling different at school, and has said that she preferred being with adults and performing to fitting in. She sang, did impressions and acted in school productions, and she has often spoken warmly of the family dinners, music and banter at home, and of her grandmother, Pat, who was a constant presence. At seventeen she won her first film role, in The Falling, from an open casting call, beating hundreds of others while still at school. She went on to Lady Macbeth, Little Women, which earned her an Oscar nomination, and Oppenheimer, and she plays Yelena Belova in the Marvel films. She often returns to Oxford, and she has spoken of her family as the reason she has stayed grounded.”
