1917 – 1946“I knew by the autumn of 1946 that the Dutch intended to restore colonial control over Bali regardless of what Sukarno had proclaimed in August 1945. When they surrounded my Ciung Wanara regiment near Marga on the twentieth of November, I had a choice that was not truly a choice: surrender to people who had no right to rule this island, or fight. We fought. All ninety-six of my men died there, and I died with them. That is what puputan means — we fight until the end because the alternative is to live on terms that dishonour everything we are. I was twenty-nine years old. They named the airport after me later, which is a peculiar kind of immortality for a man who died trying to prevent foreign arrivals.”
