1965 – 2004“I began as a legal aid lawyer in Surabaya in 1989, and I spent fifteen years documenting what the Indonesian military did to people in East Timor, Aceh, and Papua — disappearances, torture, extrajudicial killings. KontraS, which we founded in 1998, gave the families of the missing somewhere to bring their grief and make it legal. I knew this work was dangerous. I received threats. I knew what happened to people who named names. On the seventh of September 2004 I boarded a Garuda flight to Amsterdam to study international law. I died somewhere over Romania, poisoned with arsenic by people I had never met but whose employers I had spent fifteen years identifying. Justice has not been done. But I am still spoken about, which means the work continues.”
