1879 – 1904“At twelve, the pingitan tradition required that I leave school and enter seclusion — I could not leave the family compound, could not study, could not speak publicly. My father the Regent understood that his daughter had a restless mind. He gave me access to Dutch newspapers and books, and I taught myself to read the world beyond these walls. I began writing letters to Rosa Abendanon, Stella Zeehandelaar, and others in the Netherlands — letters about the condition of Javanese women, about the prison of adat tradition, about why girls deserved the same education as boys. I never imagined those letters would outlive me. I died at twenty-five, four days after my son was born. The school I had just established in Rembang was the only concrete thing I left behind. The letters became the rest.”
