1898 – 1983“I was born in Banjar Tegal when Kuta was still a fishing village that smelled of salt and woodsmoke, not a tourist resort. From childhood I sat beside the men of the sekaa gong and listened until the patterns of the gamelan became as natural as breathing. The palégongan style I inherited was old and endangered — the Dutch were changing everything. I spent my life keeping it alive and, in keeping it, changing it: simplifying, refining, making it more itself. In the 1930s a Canadian named Colin McPhee came to learn, and we sat together for years. He wrote it all down in books the West could read. I did not need books. The music lived in my hands.”
