1876 – 1911“My mother died before I was two, and my father went west, so I was raised by my grandparents, Alexander and Lucy Macneill, on their farm in Cavendish on Prince Edward Island's north shore. They were strict and old-fashioned, and I was often lonely, so I made friends of the place itself, naming its trees, ponds and paths — Lover's Lane through the woods, the Haunted Wood, the Lake of Shining Waters. Grandfather was the local postmaster, and the farm kitchen was the post office, so the whole district came through our door with its news and gossip, which I soaked up. Just across the fields stood a green-gabled farmhouse belonging to my grandfather's cousins, the Macneills, where I often wandered. In June 1905, at my kitchen window, I began writing about a red-haired orphan who comes to live on a farm with a brother and sister, and set her at that green-gabled house. I lived in Cavendish for my first thirty-six years, and today the farm site and Green Gables together form a national historic site.”
