📍Montreal, Quebec, Canada
1919 – 2000“I was born Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau on the 18th of October 1919 in Montreal, Quebec, the son of a French-Canadian lawyer and a Scottish-Canadian mother. Montreal gave me the bilingual, bicultural consciousness that I later tried to build into Canada's constitution. I was an intellectual before I was a politician — I travelled the world, studied at Harvard and the London School of Economics, paddled rivers, boxed, practised judo. I became Prime Minister in 1968 and Trudeaumania swept the country. I patriated the Constitution in 1982 and entrenched the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Montreal — its French culture, its cosmopolitan energy, the St Lawrence River — was the city that made me understand Canada from the inside.”
