1993 – 2008“Samantha May Kerr was born in East Fremantle, a riverside suburb of Perth, in Western Australia, in September 1993, the daughter of Roger Kerr and Roxanne Regan. Her father had been born in Kolkata, to an English father and an Indian mother, and moved to Perth as a child, where he became a professional Australian rules footballer and later a coach. Her older brother, Daniel, went on to play more than two hundred games for the West Coast Eagles. Australian rules football was part of daily life at home, and Sam grew up with it, playing games in the backyard like handballing the ball into a bucket. She played Aussie rules with the boys as a child and loved it, and she said she hated soccer as a girl. But at twelve, as the boys grew bigger and there was no path for girls in the game, she switched to soccer. She said she was total rubbish in her first season, but her speed, strength and leaping ability, learned from Aussie rules, soon made her a formidable striker. At fifteen she made her debut for Perth Glory and for Australia's national team, the Matildas. She went on to play for Sky Blue, Chicago Red Stars and Chelsea, winning the Golden Boot in the United States, England and Australia, and became the Matildas' all-time top scorer and captain. Her backflip goal celebration, a nod to her athletic roots, became famous worldwide. East Fremantle is proud of her, and she has inspired a generation of Australian girls to play football.”
