📍Borriol, Castellón, Spain

1980 – 1999

“Sergio García was born in January 1980 in Borriol, a small hill town of whitewashed houses and orange groves just inland from Castellón de la Plana on Spain's Mediterranean coast. His father, Víctor, had started as a caddie at the nearby Club de Campo del Mediterráneo and worked his way up to become its head professional, and his mother, Consuelo, ran the club's pro shop. The club was the family's second home. Sergio first swung a club at three, under his father's guidance, and spent his childhood on the club's fairways and practice ground, watching his father teach and copying the good players. He was an exuberant, fearless, competitive boy who also loved football and supported Real Madrid. At ten he won his first junior tournament, and at twelve he became club champion at the Mediterráneo. In 1994 he won the Topolino World Junior Championship, and at fifteen he became the youngest player ever to make the cut in a European Tour event. He won the British Amateur Championship in 1998 and turned professional in 1999, at nineteen. That summer he finished second to Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship, famously running and leaping after a shot from behind a tree. He went on to play in ten Ryder Cups for Europe, and in 2017 he won the Masters on what would have been Seve Ballesteros's sixtieth birthday. He has stayed close to Borriol, where he is president of the town's football club, CF Borriol, and has even played for it.”
