📍Madrid, Spain
1974 – 1996“Tamara Rojo was born in May 1974 in Montreal, where her Spanish parents were living at the time, and when she was four months old the family returned to Spain and settled in Madrid. Her parents valued education highly, and she grew up in the city in a family that encouraged her curiosity and independence, though none of them had any connection with ballet. She started dance classes in Madrid at five, and showed such talent that she trained at the school of Víctor Ullate, the great Spanish dancer and teacher, and at eleven became a full-time student at the Royal Professional Conservatory of Dance in Madrid. Her parents supported her dancing but insisted she keep up her studies, so she took evening classes after rehearsals, and she graduated from the conservatory at sixteen, finishing secondary school over the next two years. She was strong, intelligent and fiercely determined. In 1991 she joined Ullate's company, the Ballet de la Comunidad de Madrid, and in 1994 she won the gold medal at the Paris International Dance Competition. She went on to dance with Scottish Ballet and English National Ballet, and in 2000 joined the Royal Ballet as a principal. She later earned a doctorate in dance, and became artistic director of English National Ballet in 2012, commissioning new works such as Akram Khan's Giselle, and in 2022 of San Francisco Ballet. Madrid and Spain are proud of her, and she has received Spain's Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts.”
