📍Calgary, Alberta, Canada
2003 – 2021“Tate McRae was born in Calgary, Alberta, in July 2003 and grew up in this prairie city at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, with its long, cold winters and big skies. Her mother, Tanja, is a dance teacher who ran her own dance company, and her younger brother, Tucker, is a hockey player. She spent a few years of her early childhood in Oman, in the Middle East, where her father worked, before the family returned to Calgary, and she has said that time gave her a wider view of the world. Dance was her life from the start. She trained in every style at her mother's studio, the YYC Dance Project, and in ballet at the School of Alberta Ballet, spending long hours after school in the studio. She was a fiercely competitive and disciplined dancer, and at ten she won Mini Best Female Dancer at the Dance Awards in New York. In 2016, at thirteen, she reached the final of the American television competition So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, finishing third. She began writing songs and posting them on YouTube, often filmed in her bedroom in Calgary. In 2017 her song One Day went viral, and she signed a record deal, finishing her studies at Western Canada High School online in 2021. Her songs You Broke Me First and Greedy became global hits, and her dazzling stage performances draw on the years of dance training she began as a little girl in her mother's studio.”
