📍Nairn, Highland IV12, Scotland, United Kingdom
1848 – 1868“I was born in Liverpool to Scottish parents, but it was the north of Scotland — Nairn, on the Moray Firth — that shaped me, where for a time I lived with my uncle, a minister of the Free Church. From him, and from that serious, Presbyterian, book-loving world, I took my faith, my conscience, and a conviction that right and wrong were matters worth acting upon. We were a family that moved often and knew loss, and I grew up clever, principled and quietly certain. When we sailed for New Zealand in 1868 I carried that Scottish moral seriousness with me — and it became the engine of everything I would fight for.”
