📍12 Arnold Grove, Wavertree, Liverpool L15 8HP, UK
1943 – 1949“I was born in the front bedroom of 12 Arnold Grove, a little two-up two-down terrace in Wavertree, the youngest of four. My parents had moved in after they married, and my mother had grown up on the next street. My father had been a ship's steward and by then drove buses for the Corporation. It was a tough house — a coal fire for heating, rooms about ten feet square, a tin bath, and a toilet at the bottom of a tiny yard with a one-foot flowerbed and a hen house where we kept cockerels. But it was a happy, noisy home, and my mother always had the radio on, music filling every room. When I was about seven we moved to a council house in Speke, and later she bought me my first guitar and sat up with me while I learned it, encouraging me all the way. I met Paul on the bus to school. A national blue plaque now marks the house.”
