1985 – 2004“Wayne Rooney was born in Liverpool in October 1985 and grew up in Croxteth, a working-class council estate in the north-east of the city, the eldest of three boys of Thomas Wayne Rooney, a labourer, and Jeanette, a school cleaner and dinner lady. The family lived in a modest council house and were devoted Everton supporters; Wayne's childhood hero was the Everton striker Duncan Ferguson. He shared a bedroom with his younger brothers, Graham and John. He played football on the estate from morning till night, battering a ball against walls and garage doors, and he was always bigger and stronger than the other boys. He also loved boxing, training at a local boxing club, which gave him toughness and fitness. He went to Our Lady and St Swithin's primary school and De La Salle school, and played for the local boys' club, Copplehouse, where he scored 99 goals in a season. At nine he was spotted by Everton scout Bob Pendleton and joined the club's academy, his dream come true. In 2002, just before his seventeenth birthday, he scored a stunning winning goal for Everton against Arsenal, ending their unbeaten run and becoming the Premier League's youngest scorer at the time. In 2004 he moved to Manchester United, where he became the club's all-time top scorer and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League. He also became England's record goalscorer for a time. Croxteth remains proud of the boy who never stopped kicking a ball on the estate.”
