1955 – 1964“Paul McCartney's family moved into 20 Forthlin Road, a new brick council terrace in Allerton, in 1955, when he was thirteen. His father Jim, a cotton salesman and former dance-band leader, kept an upright piano in the front room and taught the boys to listen for harmonies on the radio. The next year Paul's mother, Mary, a midwife, died of cancer, and the house became a home of three men getting by. Music was how Paul got through it. Jim was out at work all day, so when Paul and John Lennon decided to write songs together they did it here, skipping school, sitting opposite each other with guitars in the front room, scribbling lyrics in a school exercise book — and sometimes rehearsing in the tiled bathroom for its echo. Love Me Do and I Saw Her Standing There were among the songs born in this ordinary terrace, and early Quarrymen rehearsals happened here too. The National Trust bought the house in 1995 and presents it as the birthplace of the Beatles, with Mike McCartney's photographs bringing the rooms back to life.”
