📍10 Admiral Grove, Dingle, Liverpool L8 8BH, UK
1944 – 1963“Richard Starkey was born in the Dingle, a tough dockside district of Liverpool, and in 1944 he and his mother moved round the corner to 10 Admiral Grove, a tiny terraced house, after his parents separated. His mother, Elsie, worked as a barmaid at the Empress pub at the end of the road and raised him largely alone, later marrying Harry Graves, a kind stepfather who encouraged his love of music. Ringo's childhood was swallowed by illness. At six a burst appendix turned into peritonitis and kept him in hospital for most of a year; at thirteen tuberculosis sent him to a children's sanatorium at Heswall for two more. There, to ease the boredom, staff handed out percussion instruments and he joined the hospital band. He came home to Admiral Grove with a calling. He was still living there, working on the railways and then in a factory, when skiffle took hold, and he was living there when he joined the Beatles. The Empress appears on the cover of his first solo album, Sentimental Journey.”
