1980 – 1998“Steven Gerrard was born in Whiston, on the eastern edge of Liverpool, in May 1980, and grew up on the Bluebell estate in Huyton, a council estate of terraced houses and small greens. He grew up with his parents, Paul and Julie, and his older brother, Paul, who was two and a half years older and fiercely competitive. Gerrard has described the Bluebell as a normal council estate, full of tough kids who wanted to play football every single day. On Ironside Road there was a patch of grass that made an ideal five-a-side pitch, and Steven spent every spare minute there, pretending to be a professional footballer and playing against older, bigger boys who taught him to look after himself. He played for the local team, Whiston Juniors, and at eight he was spotted on the Vernon Sangster playing fields by Liverpool youth coach Hughie McAuley. When his father told him over dinner that Liverpool wanted to sign him, he felt his life change. When Steven was eight, his ten-year-old cousin, Jon-Paul Gilhooley, was among the fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough, and Steven later said the loss drove him on. He came through Liverpool's academy, made his debut in 1998, and became the club's captain at twenty-three. He led Liverpool to the miracle of Istanbul in 2005, when they came back from three goals down to win the Champions League. He has never forgotten Huyton, returning to run football camps for local children through his foundation.”
